Why Use Heavy Soft Tip Darts?
People who prefer a heavy dart to a lighter one tend to have a couple of reasons. The first is that a heavier dart will be more stable in the air, making it easier for the player to hit targets with more accuracy. A lighter dart naturally experiences more “drag” as it travels through the air because of its lower mass and a heavier dart can overcome this increased drag more easily.
The second reason is that a heavy dart tends to bounce less off the board when it hits, making it easier to recover from a missed throw. A lighter dart bounces more and this generally makes it harder for the player to hit their target again on the same turn if they miss in the first place.
Some people also believe that a heavy dart will retain momentum better than a lighter one will, which leads to the dart traveling faster through the air after it is thrown. This does seem to be connected to the “bounce off” issue because it’s likely that the momentum of the weightier dart will be enough to overcome any momentum lost to the bounce.
Why are Soft Tip Darts Lighter Than Steel Tip?
Soft tip darts are lighter because of the boards.
The world of darts has seen many changes over time. From the traditional steel tip dartboards to today’s lightweight soft-tip options, there are so many different types and styles available for players looking around at their choices.
One important innovation was made when someone created plastic electronic boards that are really fun to play on and keep score automatically – but these weren’t suitable for heavy steel tip darts because they damaged the board.
Hence, soft tip darts for electronic boards were developed with plastic or nylon tips that work well with the electronic boards. In Europe, you’ll find strict weight limitations in soft tip darts competitions and the highest weight permitted is 18 grams.
Always check the rules of your local club if you want to compete in tournaments. There is nothing worse than practicing for many hours only to find out you have to switch weight.
Final Thoughts
Heavy soft tip darts are relatively easy to come by and we’ve researched this list to include options for all budgets and levels of play of the heaviest soft tip darts available. Just remember that a 20g steel stip dart does not weigh the same as a 20g soft tip dart. This is because the weight measurement in steel tip refers only to the barrel of the dart.
However, the weight measurement for soft tip darts refers to the ENTIRE dart.
If you are aiming to achieve like-for-like weights when switching between game types keep this in mind and switch out the shafts and flights to help you match the weights more accurately.
